Chiropractor vs. physical therapy: which do you actually need?

Chiropractor vs. physical therapy: which do you actually need?

When you’re in pain, “should I see a chiropractor or a physical therapist?” is a genuinely confusing question. They overlap, they sometimes do similar things, and plenty of people benefit from both. Here’s a clear way to think about it.

The short version

  • Chiropractic focuses on the spine and joints — restoring proper alignment and motion, often with hands-on adjustments, to relieve pain and nerve irritation.
  • Physical therapy focuses on rebuilding strength, mobility, and function — often through guided exercise and rehab.

Think of it this way: chiropractic care often helps get you out of pain and moving properly; rehab and exercise help keep you strong and prevent it from returning. Many good chiropractors (including us) combine both.

When chiropractic tends to be the right first step

  • Sudden back or neck pain
  • Headaches that may stem from the neck
  • Sciatica and nerve-related pain
  • Stiffness and limited range of motion
  • Pain after a car accident

When dedicated rehab matters most

  • Recovering strength after an injury or surgery
  • Building stability to prevent re-injury
  • Sport-specific conditioning

Why “both” is often the answer

At our practice, care isn’t either/or. We combine gentle adjustments with corrective exercises, massage, and physiotherapy — so you get out of pain and build the strength to stay that way. You don’t have to figure out the right mix alone; that’s our job.

How to decide today

If you’re in pain right now and not sure where to start, start with an evaluation. We’ll tell you honestly whether chiropractic, rehab, both — or a referral elsewhere — is the right path for you.
