Electric muscle stimulation (e-stim): how it relieves pain

Electric muscle stimulation (e-stim): how it relieves pain

If you’ve ever felt a soothing, tingling pulse during a treatment, you’ve probably experienced electric muscle stimulation — “e-stim” for short. It’s one of the most common physiotherapy tools we use, and it’s gentle, drug-free, and surprisingly relaxing.

What is electric muscle stimulation?

E-stim delivers tiny, controlled electrical pulses through pads placed on your skin near the area that hurts. Those pulses prompt your muscles to contract and relax, calm pain signals, and boost circulation to the area — all of which help your body heal.

The types we use

  • Interferential current (IFC): crossing currents that penetrate deeper to relieve pain and reduce swelling — great for larger or deeper areas of pain.
  • Microcurrent (microamperage neural stimulation): very low-level currents that work at the cellular level to support tissue healing.

What e-stim helps with

  • Muscle spasms and tightness
  • Back and neck pain
  • Inflammation and swelling
  • Post-injury recovery

What it feels like

Most people describe it as a gentle tingling or light pulsing — not painful at all. We adjust the intensity to your comfort, and many patients find it genuinely relaxing.

Why we combine it with adjustments

E-stim works best as part of a plan. We often use it alongside chiropractic adjustments and other therapies: the adjustment restores motion, e-stim relaxes the surrounding muscles and calms pain, and the two together speed your recovery.
