Flexion-distraction: gentle spinal decompression for back pain & sciatica

Some back problems — especially disc-related pain and sciatica — respond beautifully to a gentle technique called flexion-distraction. It’s one of the most comfortable, effective tools we have for taking pressure off an irritated spine.
What is flexion-distraction?
Flexion-distraction is a hands-on form of spinal decompression performed on a specialized table that gently flexes and stretches the spine in a slow, rhythmic motion. As the table moves, the chiropractor applies gentle pressure to specific segments — creating space and reducing pressure inside the spinal joints and discs.
What it helps with
- Disc bulges and herniations
- Sciatica and radiating leg pain
- Lower back pain
- Spinal stenosis-related discomfort
- Stiffness and limited mobility
Why it works
Many back and leg pains come from pressure on a disc or nerve. By gently decompressing the spine, flexion-distraction creates negative pressure that can help take the load off an irritated disc and nerve — relieving pain at its source rather than masking it.
What it feels like
Gentle and comfortable. There’s no forceful thrust — it’s a slow, rhythmic stretch that many patients describe as relieving and even relaxing. It’s a great option for people who want a very low-force approach.
A drug-free, surgery-free option
For the right patient, flexion-distraction helps avoid more invasive routes. We’ll evaluate whether it’s a good fit for your specific problem — and be honest if you’d be better served another way.
