If your neck and shoulders ache by the end of a screen-filled day, you’re not imagining it. “Tech neck” is one of the fastest-growing reasons people seek chiropractic care — and it’s very fixable.
What is tech neck?
Every inch your head drifts forward to look down at a screen multiplies the load on your neck. Hold that posture for hours a day, for years, and the muscles, joints, and discs in your neck pay the price — with stiffness, aching, headaches, and even tingling into the arms.
The warning signs
- Aching at the base of the skull or between the shoulder blades
- Stiffness and reduced range of motion
- Tension headaches
- Tingling or numbness into the arms or hands
- Pain that’s worse after a long day at the desk or on your phone
What you can do at home
- Raise your screen to eye level. Your monitor’s top third should be at eye height; prop your laptop or phone up.
- Take micro-breaks. Every 30 minutes, look up, roll your shoulders, and gently move your neck.
- Strengthen the back of your neck and upper back. Simple chin-tucks and shoulder-blade squeezes counteract the forward pull.
- Set up your desk properly. Feet flat, elbows ~90°, screen arm’s length away.
When to get help
Home habits prevent and ease tech neck — but if you already have persistent pain, stiffness, headaches, or tingling, those signs mean something is already irritated. That’s where care helps.
How chiropractic fixes tech neck
We restore proper motion to the neck joints, release the tension that builds from forward-head posture, and coach you on the posture and ergonomics that keep it from coming back. Many patients are surprised how much their headaches improve, too.
